Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What kind of industries do you have experience writing for?
A. Currently, I specialize in entertainment and dog/animal reporting. I have worked for various newspapers, magazines, trade journals, in-house publications, newsletters and online magazines. I have also worked for a number of public relations firms. The following is a partial list of industries/areas I've worked with or written about: business, entertainment, movies, DVDs, video, pets, dogs, horse, veterinary, pharmaceuticals, garden, home, decorating, livestock/farming, corporate communications, publishing, sales, computer technology, city government, politics, elections, education, human interest, travel, communities.

Q. What is your background?
A. As a journalist for 16 years and a freelance writer for eight, much of the experience I have gained has been hands-on. In addition to my degree in print journalism from the University of Southern California, I gained experience through my work with community newspapers, regional publications and national magazines.

Q: Whom do you write for?
A: I have written for the Los Angeles Newspaper Group publications, the Los Angeles Times newspapers, the Pasadena Star-News, Dog Fancy Magazine, Dogs USA Magazine, Dog's Life Magazine, Pet Product News, Video Store Magazine, the All Movie Guide, She Likes DVDs.com, Veterinary Practice News, Capital Press Agriculture Weekly, the American Red Cross, the Orange County Register community papers and others.

Q. Do you provide your own photography?
A. I am an award-winning photographer (see my my photos.) So yes, I can and will provide photos to accompany my stories if it is requested.

Q. What types of assignments do you handle?
A. I can handle just about any sort of writing project, from a breaking news story to an annual report. I have vast experience in reporting, writing and creative fiction, so any writing project is within my grasp.

Q. Do you have a specialty?
A. Right now, it's  dog/animal reporting. But I enjoy and am able to write just about anything. My training as a general assignment reporter enabled me to find the story in just about any subject matter. I do write quite a bit on the animal and entertainment industries, though.

Q: Are there other aspects of your business?
A: Yes. In addition to writing, I design newsletters, brochures, wedding invitations and any other publication that needs creating. I take photos as well. I teach journalism, to both college students and elementary-school students. I am available to host an after-school program at both public and private schools. Please see my Adviser page for more info.

Q: Do you just write articles?
A: No. I also write books, both fiction and non-fiction. My new book, "Move Over, Rover," is published by a division of Random House. For more info, see my Books page.

Q. What is your rate?
A. Rates are negotiable. For journalistic writing, I charge per word, per inch or per assignment depending on the publication and story. For public relations, I charge $60 per hour, billed in 15-minute chunks. Clients are only charged for the time I worked on the project. For other design, photographic or newsletter projects, prices are negotiable and can either be billed per project or per hour.

Q. How do you normally charge clients?
A. I invoice them, with the bill coming due no later than 30 days from date of invoice.

Q. What types of material do you require to complete a project?
A. The more I get, the quicker--and more thorough--the work. The more research on a project I will have to do usually causes the final project tally to increase. This is the case with public-relations or any design-related jobs. Newspaper or other writing jobs are usually billed per word, so the amount of research time does not raise the final fee.

Q. What's the best way to contact you?
A. Email me at kyrakirkwood@sbcglobal.net . I will respond within 24 hours, if not sooner.
